How to Dye Easter Eggs

The beauty of homemade Easter Eggs with onion skins wrapped in nylon stockings. The creativity and nostalgia of the good old days.

I honestly can’t even think of a better organic egg color than this. Beautiful, cool and healthy, onion skin dye takes the cake. Since this is an organic wholesome food bog I just can’t let you use the chemical filled egg dye kit from the drug store. At least not if you plan on actually eating the eggs.

Do you want to make the coolest Easter Eggs ever? Just color them with onion dye and use fun herbs and flowers as stencils to create unique and pretty botanical design. No two eggs will be exactly the same!

You can actually use all kinds of cool stuff from nature to dye your eggs in different colors:

  • RED EGGS – I did red eggs by using both red beets + red onion skins.
  • GOLDEN MARBLED EGGS – I made this design by wrapping each egg in yellow onion skins as shown in the image below. You can also mix red and yellow onion skins for a golden red color.

The Herb Stencils

To create different botanical designs you can use anything from chervil leaves, parsley, dill to flower petals, whole flowers or grasses. The possibilities are endless. Ferns, dill and lucky charms are my favorites, especially because with the lucky charms you can make hearts and even butterflies! Magical!

Success Tip

Remember to soak the onion skins for a few hours or overnight to obtain that beautiful rich color. You can choose to also soak the prepared eggs with them to jumpstart the natural staining process, or just wait to add them to the boiling colored water. As you experiment with homemade Easter egg making, you will figure out your favorite process to accomplish your favorite colors.
