First we need to figure out how do you like your rice ? Do you like your rice fluffy or sticky ? I like mine packed with nutrients, but if you like it fluffy then start by rinsing it in a few changes of cold water and drain it very well. This will wash off a lot of the starches to give you that perfectly fluffy result but remember that you will lose some of the nutrients as well.
If you prefer sticky rice than skip the rinsing step all together. This applies to any color rice that you choose to cook: brown, red, pink or black as well, only the cooking times will be different. By following the easy 3 steps below on how to cook perfect rice every time, you should be a master rice maker from today on.
How To Make Perfect Rice Tutorial
- Start with long grain white, jasmine or basmati rice, rinse it very well and add water or stock. For every cup of rice use 1 3/4 cups of liquid. Add a pinch of sea salt and a bay leaf and bring it to a boil in a heavy bottom pan. Turn the heat down to low and cover with a tight lid.
- Allow to simmer for 11 minutes and remove from flame. Let it sit covered for 15 minutes. Remove lid and stir in 1 tablespoon of butter. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve. At this point if you want to dress it up a bit, you may add some chopped fresh herbs, lemon zest, lime juice etc.
- There are many healthier nutritious alternatives to white rice which I strongly recommend like brown rice that cooks in 45 minutes, or quick cook brown rice that cooks in 15 minutes. Black rice cooks in 35 minutes and pink rice that cooks in 20 minutes. Regardless of the type of rice you use, make sure to let them all sit covered for 15 minutes after cooking, and before fluffing up with a fork.
